Bed Bug Control

Bed Bug Control in Bellingham, WA

Treating Bed Bug Infestations in Whatcom, Snohomish & Skagit Counties

Bed bugs are among the most difficult and stressful infestations a person can face. They settle into your bed, bite you while you sleep, and make you feel dirty, even though their presence has nothing to do with how clean your home is. Anyone can get them since they are great at traveling. A simple trip with luggage through an affected location is all it takes for them to return with you. Once they arrive, they spend the day hidden in tiny cracks and come out at night to feed.

Do-it-yourself treatments rarely work because bed bugs are incredibly tough, and missing even a few eggs or immature bugs means the entire problem restarts. At Bio Bug Pest Management, our process for treating bed bug infestations involves detailed inspections to pinpoint all hiding spots. We then treat the infestation at every point in the bed bug's life cycle. This way, we eliminate them permanently, rather than just reducing the numbers for a while.

Signs of a Bed Bug Problem

Bed bugs are experts at hiding, so you may not see the insects themselves right away.

However, they leave behind several telltale signs of their presence, including:

  • Unexplained bites. Waking up with itchy, red welts, often in a line or small cluster on skin that was exposed while sleeping, is a common first sign.
  • Spots on bedding. Small, dark brown or reddish spots on your sheets, mattress, or pillowcases can be bed bug droppings or tiny blood spots from bites.
  • Shed skins or eggs. As they grow, bed bugs shed their skin. You may find these tiny, translucent exoskeletons in mattress seams, behind your headboard, or in other hiding places. Tiny, pale yellow eggs or eggshells may also be visible.
  • A musty odor. In the case of a heavy infestation, you might notice a sweet, musty odor in the room.

How Bed Bugs Get into Bellingham Homes

Bed bugs are skilled travelers, and infestations often begin after they've been unknowingly brought into a home. Because they can be found anywhere, from hotels to public transportation, it's easy to get in contact with them.

Here are some of the most common ways we see people become infested:

  • Travel. This is one of the most common ways bed bugs spread. They can crawl into luggage, purses, or backpacks in an infested hotel room, airplane, or bus and then be carried home.
  • Secondhand furniture. Used mattresses, bed frames, and upholstered furniture can harbor bed bugs and their eggs. It's crucial to thoroughly inspect any secondhand items before bringing them into your home.
  • Visitors. Guests can unknowingly bring bed bugs with them from an infested location, or they could pick them up while visiting someone else's home.
  • Multi-unit housing. In apartments and condos, bed bugs can travel between units through wall voids and electrical sockets.

Bed Bug Prevention for Travelers

Taking a few precautions when you travel can significantly reduce the risk of bringing bed bugs home.

To keep from becoming an unwitting taxicab for these pests, follow these tips when travelling:

  • Inspect the bed. Pull back the linens and check the mattress and box spring seams for any signs of bed bugs, such as dark spots or shed skins. Also, check the headboard and the wall behind it.
  • Use the luggage rack. Keep your suitcase on the luggage rack rather than the floor or the bed. This makes it harder for bed bugs to crawl inside.
  • Wash everything upon return. When you get home, unpack your suitcase directly into the washing machine. Wash your clothes in hot water and dry them on high heat to kill any potential bed bugs or eggs that may have tagged along. Store your empty luggage in a garage or basement, not your bedroom.

If you ever slip up and bring home unwelcome company, Bio Bug Pest Management will be there to help with effective pest management services that are safe, effective, and dependable.
